Being in a relationship & living with IBD

Being in a relationship means on-going communication. This includes communication about our own health and needs, while understanding the needs of our partner as well. Communication can help a relationship grow and intimacy can help keep that bond strong.

“Intimacy now really is not really much of a problem. I’m in a committed relationship with my partner for 6 years who’s very supportive and understanding of everything about me and understands me on many levels. It’s very comforting to know that she is there and is very supportive of me otherwise I would just crumble. My advice would be to give yourself grace when you’re not able to be intimate. You know your comfort levels in terms of intimacy with this condition.”

“My partner has probably done more research around Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis and stomas than I have so she can fully understand me. And knowing that has helped me accept myself a lot more.”
